Since Sunday is Father’s Day I wanted to share with you a bit about my own father. Whether I call him Dad or Pop, something he used to call his own father, I never question his love and support. Many of the things I love come from my father.

He introduced me to the kitchen, sharing many moments with me about cooking and food. My family hosted most of the holidays growing up so the kitchen was always a place where all hands were on deck, and it was fun! Learning family recipes or even how to properly cook meat, it was my dad who taught me. Our shared love of food extends outside the kitchen as well. he introduced me to sushi at a very young age. I was proficient with chop sticks very quickly as well. If there’s a raw bar at a seafood restaurant look out! My dad and I would close the place. We both take our steaks rare, and enjoy many different types of food, but my dad and I share way more than just that.

Pop culture is so important to my job and my dad has definitely been a driving force in my taste in movies and tv. Whether it’s my love for British Comedy, sci fi movies, 007, or Seinfeld, I credit my dad with sharing his favorites, helping me develop my own tastes. We also shared some hobbies as well.

Martial Arts was a very big part of my life growing up because of my dad. Joining a karate school and practicing for nearly 15 years was a family thing. My dad was one of my instructors and then colleague when I began teaching. I’ll never forget my black belt ceremony, I was so proud and I know my dad was too! Karate wasn’t the only thing we did as a family, we bowled too. Every Sunday we’d go bowling as a family and my dad loved it, we all did.

I think about all the things my dad showed me and did with me. They were things his father did with him and I will hopefully do when I have children of my own. Most importantly, he loved me, and still does to this day. My family is coming up for Father’s Day weekend and I can’t wait to see them… especially Dad…
